How the course runs

  1. Why vital signs matter, health monitoring and early warning
    Day one opens by establishing the purpose of vital sign monitoring, how changes in readings signal early deterioration, why timely detection matters, and the role of care workers within the wider clinical team. Participants explore the NEWS2 (National Early Warning Score) framework and how vital signs feed into escalation decisions.

  2. Pulse and respiration, theory, normal ranges and deviation
    An in-depth exploration of pulse and respiratory rate, covering how each is generated physiologically, what normal ranges look like across age groups, and the significance of deviations. Participants work through case studies identifying abnormal readings and the conditions they may indicate.

  3. Temperature & blood pressure, theory, ranges & significance
    The same structured approach applied to temperature and blood pressure, normal ranges, the physiological mechanisms behind deviations, and the clinical significance of readings outside normal parameters. Participants explore hypo/hyperthermia, hypo/hypertension, and the conditions that cause them.

  4. Documentation, reporting & escalation
    How to accurately record vital sign readings, use observation charts correctly, identify trends over time, and know when and how to escalate concerns. Participants work through documentation exercises and explore the communication skills needed to hand over effectively to clinical colleagues.

  5. Q&A, consolidation & preparation for day 2
    Day one closes with a Q&A and group consolidation of the theory covered, preparing participants for the practical focus of Day 2. Facilitators preview the equipment and skills that will be covered the following day.

  6. Practical measurement, pulse & respiration
    Day two opens with hands-on practice measuring pulse rate, rhythm, and strength using manual palpation and pulse oximetry. Participants also practise respiratory rate counting, including identifying abnormal patterns such as Cheyne-Stokes. Each participant measures multiple readings and receives facilitator feedback on technique.

  7. Practical measurement, temperature & blood pressure
    Hands-on practice with thermometers (tympanic, oral, axillary) and sphygmomanometers, both manual and electronic. Participants practise taking accurate blood pressure readings, positioning, common errors, and how to identify and respond to readings outside normal range. All equipment is provided.

  8. Clinical interpretation, & scenario based exercises
    Participants work through a series of clinical scenarios, interpreting sets of vital sign readings, identifying abnormal patterns, calculating NEWS2 scores, and deciding appropriate escalation responses. Group discussion and facilitator feedback build confidence in making sound clinical judgements.

  9. Factors effecting vital signs & special considerations
    Exploring the range of factors that affect vital sign readings, age, medication, physical activity, anxiety, underlying conditions — and how to account for these when interpreting results. Participants also explore special considerations for individuals with specific conditions including diabetes, heart failure, and respiratory disease.

  10. Final assessment, Q&A & certification
    The course closes with a practical competency check and knowledge assessment. Participants who complete all assessments successfully receive their certification. A final Q&A allows any outstanding questions to be addressed before the close of the course.

CTC Certified for 3 years
Assessed through practical demonstrations and knowledge checks throughout the course. Successful completion earns a certificate valid for 3 years, and the training can be recorded as part of your SSSC Continuous Professional Learning (CPL). Renew through further training when your certificate expires.
