How the course runs
- What is Dementia? Symptoms, types & misdiagnosis
The session opens with a thorough grounding in dementia, what it is, how it differs from normal ageing, and the range of symptoms it presents. Participants explore the main types of dementia (Alzheimer's, vascular, Lewy body, frontotemporal) and learn how to differentiate dementia from other conditions such as delirium or depression that can present similarly. - Risk reduction & empathy
This section explores what we know about modifiable risk factors for dementia, and why that matters for the people we support. Facilitated discussion helps participants develop genuine empathy for the experience of living with dementia, drawing on case studies and lived experience perspectives. - Communication strategies and person centred care
The most practically focused section, participants learn and practise communication approaches that work for people living with dementia, including validation, reminiscence, and how to adapt when verbal communication becomes difficult. Person-centred care principles are explored through real scenarios, emphasising the individual behind the diagnosis. - Legislation, rights & support organisations
An overview of the legislative framework around dementia care in Scotland, including the Adults with Incapacity Act, the Mental Health (Care and Treatment) Act, and relevant SSSC standards. Participants are introduced to key support organisations and resources available to both individuals and their carers. - Assessment, Q&A & certification
Continuous assessment runs throughout. The session closes with an open Q&A, participants are encouraged to bring workplace scenarios, followed by a knowledge check and certification for those who complete all assessments successfully.
