Carers Voices: Lorraine’s Story of Carer Burnout and Recovery
Recognising Carer Burnout: Lorraine’s Story
In this episode of Carers Voices, Lorraine shares her deeply personal journey of caring for her mother as her health deteriorated after the age of 80 and she came to need round-the-clock care.
Alongside her two sisters, Lorraine took turns caring for their mother, often putting her own needs and wellbeing aside. The pressures of providing care, combined with the isolation and additional stress of the COVID-19 pandemic, eventually took a significant toll on her mental health.
Lorraine speaks openly about experiencing carer burnout, reaching breaking point and beginning the journey towards recovery. Her story highlights the importance of recognising the warning signs of burnout, asking for help early and understanding that taking a break is not something to feel guilty about.
Her message to fellow Unpaid Carers is one of hope and reassurance: you do not have to do everything alone, and your wellbeing matters too. Seeking support, making time for yourself and allowing yourself time to heal are all important parts of the caring journey.
Whether you’re a young carer, a family member, or simply curious about the role young carers play in our communities, this episode will deepen your understanding and leave you inspired to make a difference.
